This isn’t your standard off-the-shelf tour – this is a personalized, customized experience. You won’t be herded around with a big group on a tour bus with limited “free time” at each destination. This is YOUR customized adventure, specifically curated to your wishes and dreams of Italy. We will stroll through towns, villages, and landmarks of your choice with me, Susie Macklem, acting as your travel coach. No need to struggle with a map – all you will need is your spirit of adventure, camera, and a mind’s eye to capture your memories. Leave the rest to me!
Day One: Rome
The Italian Adventure Begins!
Arrival at Rome Fiumicino Airport. I’ll be waiting for you to take you to your apartment in Rome. After check-in, we will take a light stroll in the city. Depending on the time of day, we’ll enjoy an authentic Italian meal at a local Italian restaurant.
Day Two: Rome
Put on your walking shoes – a walking tour of Rome!
Today we’ll experience the city on foot, and visit some of the most famous sites of the city! Our itinerary includes monuments like the Pantheon, Piazza Venezia & Victor Emmanuel Monument, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps & Piazza di Spagna, Circus Maximus, La Bocca Della Verita (the Mouth of Truth), Campo de Fiori, Piazza Navona, Arch Of Constantine, Trajan’s Column, and the Column Of Marcus Aurelius…just to name a few!
Day Three: Rome
Appointment with the Romans: From gladiators to popes
We’ll start the morning with a visit to the Roman Forum, adventure inside the Colosseum, and see the Palatine Hill. The afternoon will take us to St. Peter’s Square and Basilica and the Vatican, where we can tour the Sistine Chapel.* On our way to dinner we will pass by Castel Sant’Angelo
Day Four: Rome-Travel to Florence
A Reservations with culture
Our day will start early with a morning reservation at the Borghese Art Gallery and Garden. The next stop will be at the Crypt of the Capuchin Friars. Now, it’s time to say goodbye to the Romans and hello to the Renaissance, as we pack up and head to Florence. Our first stop will be at Piazzale Michelangelo fora beautiful panoramic view of the city we will soon be discovering. Then, check-in at the B&B in Florence.
Day Five: Florence
Put those walking shoes back on as we reveal the Renaissance
Today we will explore the Piazza del Duomo, Giotto’s Campanile, and the Baptistery. Then on to Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, the Palazzo Vecchio and Loggia dei Lanzi, Orsanmichele, the Porcellino, and Santa Croce. Our walking tour will take us on both sides of the Arno River and past many Renaissance wonders.
Day Six: Florence
Meeting the Big Guy himself: David and so much more
Today we’ll head to the Accademia Museum, home of Michelangelo’s David. Once there, we will meet our professional tour guide (who will help us skip the lines!). We will spend some time with David before heading to the Boboli Gardens for the afternoon.
Day Seven: Day Trip to Cinque Terre and Pisa
An early morning scenic drive
An early start gives us a beautiful drive to La Spezia, where we will catch the train to the five villages of Cinque Terre: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. You’ll quickly see why Cinque Terre is known as the Italian Riviera! After soaking in the sun and exploring these beautiful seaside villages, we will head back to Florence, but not without stopping at Pisa to see the infamous Leaning Tower of Pisa!
Day Eight: Moving on to Marradi
Up the mountain we go!
This morning we’ll say goodbye to Florence and head to Marradi to the Palazzo Torriani, a family-owned villa that’s over 500 years old. We will settle into our new surroundings and have lunch in Marradi with a special dinner prepared by the family of the Palazzo.
Day Nine: Marradi
A day in Emilia-Romagna
After a creamy cappuccino in Marradi, we’ll hop in the car and drive to a five century-old Italian family farm of Monte Spada. Here, we’ll have lunch prepared by the family matriarch using items grown on their farm. As we eat, we’ll learn about the food and taste the olive oil pressed from this farm. After lunch, we’ll move on to the medieval clock tower and the Rock Tower Fortress of Brisighella. Dinner will be at a local restaurant serving authentic dishes of the area.
Day Ten: Venice
A visit to the city on the water
Say good-bye the mountain village of Marradi, because today we will travel to Venice, the city on the water. We’ll take a high speed train to Venice, where it will drop us off right in the heart of the action. We will have a late afternoon reservation at Teatro La Fenice, and after that we will go to a rooftop terrace for amazing views and unbelievable photo opportunities. Finally, we’ll stroll by the Scala Contarini del Bovolo (stairs of the snail).
Day Eleven: Venice
A walking day on the city of water
We’ll start our day at one of Venice’s most famous squares – Piazza San Marco.We’ll visit St. Mark’s Basilica, take an elevator to the bell tower, and stop by some museums, including St. Mark’s Museum and the Doge’s Palace Museum. While strolling around the square, keep a lookout for the Bridge of Sighs and other important sites! Before our day finishes, we will take a ride down the Grand Canal using the public water system, the Vaporetto.
Day twelve: Venice
A day on the water
Waking early, we will jump on the Vaporetto (water bus) to the famous Church San Giorgio Maggiore. Once there, we will head straight to the back of the church and take the elevator to the top of the Bell Tower for a one-of-a-kind perspective of St. Mark’s Square. Then, it’s back on the Vaporetto as we boat to the islands of Murano and Burano. We’ll end the day with another ride through the Grand Canal.
Day Thirteen: Ciao Italy
Pack up your suitcases and take one last look around!
Depending on your departure time, we will check out and make our way to the Marco Polo airport in Venice.
